Find out why breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and what you should eat in the morning to live a healthy lifestyle

The Importance of Eating Breakfast

We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but why is it so crucial to our health? And why is it so beneficial to our day-to-day lives? We’ll tell you.

The Facts About Breakfast

Many breakfasts today are high in carbohydrates, with foods like bread and sugary cereals being go-to options for many people. But eating carbs early in the day can hinder your body’s ability to burn fat. It may feel tempting to opt for a toastie, but such food will cause your blood sugar to increase then drop dramatically, escalating your body’s desire to eat a sugary mid-morning snack in order to top your blood sugar back up.

By choosing to consume a high-energy, low-carb meal at the start of the day instead, your body will be able to burn body fat, and you should find that you feel full until lunchtime. Overall, eating a healthy meal when you wake up is imperative, and this is because...

  • It gives you energy
  • It kickstarts your metabolism
  • It stabilises your blood sugar

What’s more, having a decent breakfast gets you in the right mindset for your day, and you’ll be more likely to eat balanced dishes later on if you begin your day in the right way.

What Should We Eat for Breakfast?

Opting for healthier choices like vegetable omelettes, avocado with eggs, and flaxseed-based recipes will give you plenty of stamina to power through your day and prevent you from having high-sugar snacks later on, too.

If you find it hard to stay away from those bacon sandwiches, bacon and avocado bites are a delicious alternative. They only take 15 minutes to make, so they’re perfect if you don’t have much time to spare in the mornings.

If you have a sweet tooth, treats like healthy blueberry muffins will help you curb cravings for sugary treats. They’re satisfying yet low in sugar, and they only need to be in the oven for 20 minutes, so they’re the ideal treat if you’re planning a wholesome weekend brunch.

Breakfast on the Move

Planning out your morning meals is a sound idea in theory, but in practice you could oversleep, you might need to go into work early, or you could get stuck in traffic and therefore won’t be able to eat that delicious pre-planned breakfast you put in the office fridge.

If you get caught out, don’t panic. If you always have a backup plan ready, you can grab a low-carb treat even if you have a hectic start to your day. A low-carb muesli, for example, is perfect if you don’t have time to cook in the mornings.

Snack bars can be a sensible and tasty low-carb breakfast choice, too. High in protein and fibre, handy bars such as Harvest Bars will provide you with slow-burning, low-carb energy until lunchtime.
