Did you know...

According to the 2012 Australian Health Survey, Australians on average consume 229 grams of carbs per day. Twenty six percent of those carbs (60 grams or the equivalent of 14 teaspoons of white sugar) were sugars - a mix of naturally occurring and added sugars.

The 2012 Sugar Consumption in Australia report found the average sugar consumption was more than 27 teaspoons a day – a higher quantity per capita than in the US, UK and Canada.

Whichever stats you look at, it’s clear that it’s a lot of sugar and a lot of carbs consumed by Australians each year. If you are looking to lead a healthier life, a reduction in both will get you on track.

Limiting carbohydrate intake (including hidden sugars) while consuming an optimal amount of protein and natural fats offers a variety of health benefits including:

  • Consistent energy levels throughout the day
  • Burning your built-up reserves of fat and fuel, instead of carbs
  • Eliminating spikes and slumps in your blood sugar
  • You'll feel fuller, for longer.

A low carb lifestyle doesn’t have to be as daunting as people make it out to be. Living a low carb lifestyle means consuming less than 100g net carbs per day.

The three key points to the Atkins nutritional approach are as follows:

  • Make sure you have adequate protein - protein keeps you satisfied, your hunger remains under control
  • When you pick carbohydrates, pick the highest fibre carbohydrates available
  • Make sure you include some kind of healthy fat, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil with the meal.

If you follow those three basic rules, you'll cut back on sugar and carbohydrates, and you'll be healthier in the long run.

The BEST part about living a low carb lifestyle is that you don’t have to starve yourself or eat less. Atkins will teach you how to make smart choices, with a VARIETY of different food options that will leave you satisfied and your taste buds happy.
